The short version
Parlonix is a place for communities to chat, talk in voice and post in forums. You need to be at least 13. Your stuff stays yours, and we only use it to run Parlonix. Don't post anything illegal, don't go after people, don't spam, and don't try to break in. Communities set their own rules on top of these. If you break these terms we can remove what you posted or close your account. Parlonix is run by Toni, an individual, not a company. It's provided as it is, and things will sometimes go wrong. The rest of this page says the same thing in more detail.
Who runs this
Parlonix is run by Toni, an individual, not a company. In these terms, "Parlonix", "we" and "us" mean Toni. "You" means the person using Parlonix.
These terms cover the website at parlonix.com, the app at app.parlonix.com, community pages at addresses like yourname.parlonix.com, and the Windows and Android apps. The Privacy Policy explains what we do with your information and is part of these terms.
Agreeing to these terms
You have to accept these terms to create an account. By signing up or using Parlonix, you're agreeing to them. If you don't agree, don't use it.
Your account
- You must be 13 or older. You confirm this when you sign up. If the law where you live sets a higher age for using a service like this without a parent's permission, you need to meet that too, or have that permission. If we find out an account belongs to someone under 13, we'll close it.
- One person per account. Don't share an account, and don't sell or hand it over to someone else.
- Be accurate. Use a real email address you can get to. It's how you reset your password and how we reach you.
- Keep it safe. Use a strong password you don't use anywhere else. Turn on two factor sign in if you can. You're responsible for what happens on your account, so tell us at [email protected] if you think someone else got in.
- Usernames. Don't pick a name that pretends to be someone else, or one that's meant to offend. We can change or take back a username that breaks these terms.
What you can't do
These apply everywhere on Parlonix: channels, voice, DMs, forums, profiles, usernames, community names and anything you upload.
- Nothing illegal. Don't post, share or link to anything that's against the law, or use Parlonix to plan or help with a crime.
- No child sexual abuse material, ever. Zero tolerance. We remove it, close every account involved, keep what the law requires us to keep, and report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) through its CyberTipline, and to law enforcement where required. Sexualising minors in any form, drawn or written included, is treated the same way.
- No harassment. Don't bully, stalk, threaten or pile on anyone. Don't keep contacting someone who has blocked you or told you to stop.
- No threats or violence. No threats of violence, no encouraging people to hurt themselves or others, no content that celebrates real attacks.
- No hate. Don't attack people for their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, disability, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.
- No doxxing. Don't share someone's private information (address, phone number, real name they haven't made public, ID, financial details) without their permission.
- No sexual content involving people who didn't agree to it, including intimate images shared without consent and fake ones.
- No spam or bots. No bulk messages, ads nobody asked for, scam links, fake engagement or automated accounts. Don't use scripts to post, join communities or send friend requests.
- No malware or hacking. Don't upload viruses or anything harmful, don't phish, don't try to get into accounts or parts of Parlonix that aren't yours, and don't try to overload or knock the service over.
- No impersonation. Don't pretend to be another person, a community, a company or Parlonix staff.
- No ban evasion. If a community bans you, don't come back on another account. If we suspend or close your account, don't make a new one.
- No scraping. Don't collect data from Parlonix with bots, scrapers or crawlers, and don't harvest people's names, emails or messages. Search engines reading community pages that a community has opened to the web is fine.
- Respect other people's rights. Don't upload things you don't have the right to share, like someone else's copyrighted work.
If you find a security problem, tell us at [email protected] instead of using it. We won't come after anyone who reports a problem in good faith and doesn't use it to hurt people or get at their data.
Your content
You own what you post. Messages, posts, uploads and everything else you put on Parlonix stay yours.
To run the service we need your permission to handle it. So you give Parlonix a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty free license to store, copy, display, transmit and format your content, only as needed to run Parlonix: showing your messages to the people in the channel, keeping forum edit history, making image previews, sending notifications, keeping backups, and so on. We don't use it for anything else, and we don't sell it.
That license ends when your content is deleted, with two exceptions. Copies in backups last until those backups roll off (see the Privacy Policy). And things other people already did with it, like quoting you in a reply, aren't undone.
Who can see what you post
- What you post in a community can be seen by whoever that community lets into the channel or forum section.
- Public community pages. A community can choose to open its forum to the web. If it does, posts in its public sections can be read by anyone, without an account, and search engines can find them. Your display name and avatar show next to your posts there.
- File links. Every uploaded file gets a long, random link that can't be guessed. Anyone who has the link can open the file, without signing in. So if someone copies the link out of Parlonix and shares it, it works for whoever gets it.
Deleting things
You can delete your messages and posts where the community allows it. A deleted message disappears for everyone straight away. We keep the text for 30 days in case it's needed for a safety report, then erase it for good (see the Privacy Policy). If you delete your account, what you wrote in communities stays there, and so do direct messages you sent to people, shown as written by "Deleted user".
Feedback
If you send us ideas or suggestions, we can use them without owing you anything.
Communities and their rules
Anyone can start a community. The owner and the moderators they pick run it. They can set their own rules on top of these terms, decide who sees which channels and sections, and remove messages, kick or ban people. Their rules can be stricter than ours, never looser.
Owners are responsible for running their community within these terms. If a community keeps letting rule breaking slide, or is set up for it, we'll deal with the community as a whole.
Every community decides things differently, and we're not responsible for a community's own moderation calls. If a community bans you and you think it's wrong, take it up with them. If you think they broke these terms, report it to us.
How we enforce this
Parlonix has a small staff team. If something breaks these terms, we can do any of these, depending on how bad it is:
- remove content
- warn you
- suspend your account for a while
- close your account for good
- take a community down
- report it to the police or other authorities, where the law requires it or someone is in danger
We usually tell you what happened and why. We might not if telling you would put someone at risk or get in the way of an investigation.
To look into reports of abuse and keep people safe, Parlonix staff can read a community's channels, or one person's messages, but only by opening a logged audit with a written reason. Every look is recorded. The Privacy Policy explains exactly how that works.
If you think we got it wrong, email [email protected] and tell us why. A real person will read it.
Reporting a problem
Use the report button on the message, post or profile in the app. It sends the report straight to Parlonix staff, with the message in context. You can also email [email protected]. If someone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first.
The desktop and Android apps
The Windows and Android apps open the same Parlonix as the browser, so these terms cover them too. The Windows app checks parlonix.com for updates and installs them itself. If you got an app from an app store, that store's own terms also apply to the download.
Don't modify, copy or redistribute the apps, or pass off a modified version as ours.
Paid features
Parlonix is free right now and nothing is for sale. We plan to offer paid extras later, such as Community Plus for communities. If we do, we'll show you the price and any extra terms before you pay anything, and nothing you already use for free will be taken away without notice.
Community Plus includes a custom address at yourname.parlonix.com. Setting your first address is included. Changing it to a different address costs $7, and a community can change it at most once every 3 months. Removing an address is free, but setting a different one within 3 months of removing it counts as a change. Parlonix staff review every change and can decline a name or change one that breaks these terms, and we tell you why. We don't charge for a change we decline.
The service, as it is
Parlonix is built and run by one person. We work hard to keep it up and keep your data safe, but we can't promise it will always be available, fast, or free of bugs. We provide Parlonix "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, as far as the law allows.
We can change, add or remove features, and we can stop offering Parlonix altogether. If we ever shut it down, we'll give you notice and a chance to ask for a copy of your data first.
Keep your own copy of anything you can't afford to lose. Our backups are there to recover the service, not to restore one person's deleted message.
Limits on liability
As far as the law allows, Parlonix isn't liable for indirect or knock on losses, like lost profits, lost data or lost opportunities, or for what other users and communities post or do. If we are liable to you for something, the most we'll owe is the amount you paid us in the 12 months before it happened, or 50 US dollars, whichever is more. Today nothing is for sale, so for now that's 50 US dollars.
Some places don't allow limits like these. Where that's the case, they apply only as far as the law there lets them. Nothing here takes away rights you have that can't be signed away.
If you break these terms or the law and someone brings a claim against Parlonix because of it, you agree to cover the costs that causes us, as far as the law allows.
Ending things
You can stop using Parlonix whenever you like. You can delete your account in Account settings, or ask us to by emailing [email protected]. If you own a community, you'll need to hand it over to someone else or delete it first.
We can suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if the law requires it, or if your account puts other people or Parlonix at risk. Parts of these terms that should keep applying after your account is gone, like the license for backups, the liability limits and governing law, still do.
Changes to these terms
We'll update these terms as Parlonix changes. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. The date at the top says when they last changed. If you keep using Parlonix after a change takes effect, you're agreeing to the new version. If you don't agree, you can delete your account.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana, USA, and applicable US federal law. Disputes go to the courts of Indiana, unless the law where you live says otherwise for consumers and gives you the right to bring a claim at home. Before going to court, email us and we'll try to sort it out.
If any part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce something straight away, we haven't given up the right to.
